TWO BLOCKS OF WOOD AND A WASHING UP BOWL 27-4-07

I'm sure you have all been on the edge of your seats since last week wondering if my steering has improved.

Well the answer is sort of. I can follow the difficult bends in the roads, and the roundabouts I encountered today are still intact.

But I have bigger problems, namely that I have absolutely no co-ordination! This is not a new discovery. Despite years of ballet as a child I still have no balance or the ability to move my hands or feet in unison.

Previously this was only a problem when I learnt to swim-I can still only swim breaststroke because I can't seem to keep both legs straight and swim over-arm simultaneously.

Now I am endeavouring to apply equal pressure with both hands and feet.

I'm fine with my left hand and foot; the clutch, gear stick and the left of the steering wheel all get the right amount of pressure. But I cling on for dear life with my right hand, and brake full force most of the time.

And that's when I'm on gentle country roads. Today we ventured onto the A66, suffice to say it was a short trip and we were both relieved when it ended.

My instructor has told me to practice shifting my feet on two blocks of wood to hopefully improve my rhythm. So for the next three weeks (apparently teaching me requires long holidays!) I will be found in my room pushing pieces of wood with my feet and turning the washing-up bowl round and round. Alone obviously.

I did brake quickly enough to let the pheasant cross the road though.
