BEHIND THE WHEEL
20-4-07

I'm in danger of becoming a driver, or so my instructor tells me, if only I could remember to steer! Yes, slightly belatedly at the age of 21, I have finally got round to it. The thing is, that's my problem: going round. Or to be more specific turning the wheel with both hands in time to avoid the kerb or the roundabout.

I've almost got the gears down, and have stopped setting off like Jenson Button trying to win a race whenever I hear 'a little bit of gas' But somehow I still appear to be convinced that steering is a one-handed activity which should only be performed at the last possible second.

Those who know me will be thinking all kinds of things at this point, mostly that, as someone whose sense of direction is so bad that I once got lost going to the Odeon, from the Town Hall! I should not be let loose on the roads.

Well, they may be right but I'm a much better driver than I expected (despite the impression I've no doubt just put across) and besides when I pass my test they won't be invited on any crazy road-trips I decide to take. I'm certain this will come as a huge blow to them all.

Till then I shall continue to check my blind spot and strive for improvement. I haven't booked a block of lessons, choosing instead to call and make arrangements on a weekly basis.

My instructor is going on holiday next week, but I'm sure that's just a coincidence!
