SALTBURN BANK, THE A19 AND AN ICE CREAM
13-6-07

Due to some technological glitches, I have not recorded my driving adventures for a while, despite having 4 hours of lessons. Therefore this column will combine the best, and the worst bits-always more entertaining- of my time on the road, aren't I good to you?

Last Friday I was on fire. I was focused and determined and, as a result, drove a thousand times better than ever before, leading John to suspect I had secretly been having lessons elsewhere!

I was a good girl; I steered my way down Saltburn Bank and avoided driving into the sea! -Which if you've ever driven it you'll know is not an easy task, especially for a ditzy learner. In return for my hard work, John bought me an ice cream, in Redcar, bless him. Clearly my instincts were good when I picked my instructor.

I still had the occasional slip-up, but for the most part drove with confidence.

Today was the first time I've driven in the rain, and to be honest my illogical brain had more trouble working out the windscreen wipers than remembering the rules of driving.

Roundabouts are becoming routine now; and today I managed to play chicken with the traffic on the A19 without getting my goose cooked-how's that for a mixed metaphor?

Traffic lights were not my friend this afternoon, every time I approached a light it immediately turned red. In return for this inconvenience, and to make up for the gloomy weather, the powers that be delivered the only tractor I have ever encountered, as a passenger or whilst driving, whose driver was willing to be overtaken. Much appreciated.

Good job, as my trick for today was skipping gears. Partly out of frustration at being stationary so often, and partly because second gear kept getting stuck I decided to skip it whenever possible.

My instructor asked for the link to this column. I better be careful what I write in future, otherwise I suspect there will be no more ice creams for Elle.
