A LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL 3-7-07

Today was by far the best lesson I have had. After a shaky start pulling out of my road, I pulled myself together and got my head in the game. To quote my wonderful instructor, 'the light at the end of the tunnel is getting bigger'.

For the majority of the lesson, I drove well. So well in fact that John asked if I'd had a particularly good sleep, erm no John, I had a good night out. No alcohol of course, because had I drank any, it would certainly have still been in my system at 10.30 am when I started my lesson.

I hope that my readers are cheering on my progress, but I realise that a good lesson may well translate into a dull column. So here's what wasn't so good.

My first emergency stop was ridiculously slow, anything in my path would have been under my wheels by the time the car screeched to a halt. My second attempt was a massive improvement (thank god)

Once again reversing down a side street did not cause me too many problems, I did come up slightly onto the kerb but corrected my mistake quickly.

My un-aided 3-point turn was not too bad, much better than a fellow learner driver who I watched not only clip the kerb, but mount the pavement ensuring that any unfortunate pedestrians would have been obliterated.

See I'm getting good now, I have to resort to recording other driver's mishaps to spice up my column.

Good, but not infallible. I still need to think about what is going on around me more, and not just how I'm driving, because part of driving is hazard perception.

A 'safe and convenient' place to stop does not include directly opposite a fire station! Few hazards are bigger than a fire engine charging into my car on the way to an emergency call-out, therefore I would have failed my test spectacularly.

On the whole I was thrilled with the way I drove, no Valium for John today, and a celebratory Mars bar for Elle-I really know how to live! Lol.
