HIGNETT'S KNIGHTS BEAT MENDIETA'S BOYS 4-3 19-5-09

Boro legends Craig Hignett and Gaizka Mendieta went head to head on Monday evening, becoming player managers for an MFC charity match to raise money for Teeside Hospice.

Local businessmen and fans had bid for the chance to line up with the ex players and the event raised £12,000 for Teesside Hospice and other local charities.

The sun showers did not dampen anyone's spirits and Boro defender David Wheater was a special guest in the Riverside's hospitality suit.

Mendi's team 'Afforda Skip Limited' were winning 3-1 until an impressive fight back and a wonder goal from Hignett himself secured a 4-3 triumph for Higgy's Knights.

After the match ComeOnBoro.com's Elle Brunton caught up with Mendi and Higgy.

EB: So, was it nice to be back at the Riverside?

GM: Yes it was nice to be back especially for this game it is nice to play and it is a good event.

EB: You still live on Teesside, have you been following Boro's season closely?

GM: Sort of, it has been disappointing obviously where Middlesbrough are to see the team but still they aare still up for the last game so let's hope we make it and can stay in the Premier League next season.

CH: I've done my hamstring in again!

EB: And your playing again on Thursday?... [TFM's Cash For Kids Charity Match]

CH: Yeah, I'll have played three matches this month, and I played three last month as well!

This is the time when all the games come round.

EB: Dave Allan [MFC's Media And Communications Manager and one of the event organisers] tried to sub you!

CH: Yeah, he didn't get far with that! He had no chance in getting me off cos I knew there was a goal in it! I can go off happy if i've scored, if I haven't I'm not coming off!
