AN INTERVIEW WITH WILLO FLOOD: A ComeOnBoro.com EXCLUSIVE 5-3-2010

At a recent MFC in the community event (Micro Soccer) ComeOnBoro.com's Elle Brunton caught up with Boro's new Irish midfielder, Willo Flood to talk flukey goals, Celtic team mates and returning to Cardiff.

EB: We are playing Cardiff on Saturday, you had quite a disappointing spell there didn't you? Will that affect how you play against them?

WF: I signed for Cardiff from Manchester City and then went to Dundee United on loan. Obviously the manager is still there and some of the players and it will be nice, as long as we come away with three points, and I always want to win anway.

EB: And the next home match is the big north east derby against Newcastle. Coming from Celtic, you obviously understand the nature of big derbies but have the other players started to look ahead to it yet?

WF: They haven't even mentioned it to be fair, it's important to the fans, and the players, but it's Cardiff first.

"I've played in a few derbies myself, I played in the Manchester derby and obviously Celtic and Rangers, they are the ones the fans want to win, and the players want to win as well."

EB: You are quite a scrappy player, in a good way, against QPR you were getting kicked and nudged about quite a bit but you gave as good as you got. Your size doesn't seem to bother you battling against anyone?

WF: I like to put it about, like to put a few tackles in. I've always been like that since I was a little boy. Never been born with a silver spoon, I think everything you get you deserve in life.

EB: I spoke to Justin Hoyte recently and he is still insisting he meant to score the goal he got at Barnsley... but you endeared yourself to the fans by immediately admitting yours against Swansea was a fluke.

WF: Well I think I'm a bit more honest than Hoytey! (laughs)

EB: And you got the goal of the SPL season while on loan at Dundee United, are you aiming for goal of the Championship?

WF: (laughing) Well I don't think it'll get me that! I'll try, I got more goals that season but I will try my best.

EB: You came to Boro with quite a few of your Celtic team mates, did that make the transition easier?

WF: It's been easier with the boys that have come in from Celtic because they understand you in training and having someone you know can be important.

"But they are a good bunch of lads [the existing Boro boys] a great squad, with young players.

EB: You arrived pretty much at the same time Adam Johnson left, were you disappointed not to get the opportunity to play more games with him?

WF: I was disappointed because he's a great player, but I know what Manchester City are about and now they've got the big money up there.

"I think he's played every game since he's been there so he's proved a few people wrong, they thought he wouldn't play but he's obviously part of their plans and he's proved he's good enough.

EB: Are you full international for the Republic of Ireland?

WF: No, I never got there, I went all the way up to Under 21s but I'm not a full international.

EB: Is that your next ambition then?

WF: I haven't really thought about it to be honest. If Trapattoni comes calling then obviously I'd love to play, but my ambition is to get Boro back into the Premiership and hopefully we can achieve that, for me it's one step at time.

Willo Flood signed for Boro for an undisclosed fee until June 2011 but is aiming to spent his second season with the club in the Premier League.

Flood's energy, industry and enthusiasm for our cause have given us a big boost and he is well on his way to becoming a real fan favourite. However, if Boro are to keep pace, or catch up, with the other play-off contenders then we must beat Cardiff tomorrow.
