SPOTLIGHT ON JOSH WALKER 10-4-09

Josh Walker has had a frustrating season, going from fringe player to Southgate's shining star and then plunging back into obscurity with an ankle injury and a frankly baffling midfield selection process.

ComeOnBoro.com's Elle Brunton met up with the young midfielder at a recent community event to ask him about the possibility of a comeback on Saturday.

Most fans have already given up Boro for dead this season and are already thinking about Championship football. But at least some of the players are still fighting for survival. Does Walker really think the team can pull off a miracle?

Walker, said: "We have got to hope so. It is a massive game on Saturday against Hull. We need three points and if we don't get them, then it would be hard.

"Games are running out..."

And asked by FMTTM Editor Rob Nichols if he had a message for the fans, Walker was happy to give praise to those who have stuck with the team. He said:

"The fans have been brilliant this season. If they keep giving us their support and we give one hundred percent for the rest of the season, that is all we can do."

EB: Gary O'Neil is suspended for Saturday's match. Does that mean you will get a chance to play?

JW: Aye, I hope so.

EB: But it must be frustrating for you. You got back to fitness so quickly and then couldn't get back in the team...

JW: Aye, it has been very frustrating. But it is an opportunity to get in there and whoever gets the opportunity on Saturday has to take it because it is a must win game.

EB: You were involved with the England Under-20s last week though? You were an Under-19 last time I spoke to you. That's the first game you've played at that level, isn't it?

JW: Yes, we won in Italy. I've been involved at every other level though.

EB: Yes, I remember. So presumably you have got to aim for the Under-21s now?

JW: Aye, that's the plan, hopefully. I have got to get in the Middlesbrough team first. I just have to keep working hard and hopefully I'll get my chance.

EB: Right thanks for that. I'll let you go watch the Champions League!

JW: Aye, cheers.

If Josh Walker does get the nod on Saturday, the fans are at least guaranteed someone on the pitch in a Boro shirt who will give his all for the cause.

It is odd that one of the most committed players at the club is a young Geordie midfielder but Walker has nailed his colours to the Boro mast (by signing a new contract when others have refused) when the ship may very well be sinking. I sincerely hope his dedication to our club is rewarded.
