AN INTERVIEW WITH ROSS TURNBULL: A ComeOnBoro.com EXCLUSIVE 9-1-09

Over the festive period MFC hosted a series of signing sessions. At one such session ComeOnBoro.com's Elle Brunton got in before the crowd gathered, to catch-up with Boro's home grown goalkeeper Ross Turnbull and talked about taking chances, becoming number one and why, despite the end result, he still loved the Liverpool match.

Ross arrived at the MFC shop early to purchase baby clothes.

EB:
So, it's been quite a year for you so far, becoming a father and first choice goalkeeper!

RT: Yes, it been a good year so far, busy!

EB: Did you immediately think that this was your chance, when Schwarzer left?

RT: The manager said if Schwarzer was going to go then he wasn't going to sign anyone to replace him. It was up to me and Brad to show what we could do.

EB: The fans had a lot of opinions about that before the season even started... did the negative reactions spur you on?

RT: Not so much, it's a bit of both. We have got to spur the fans on.

EB: Any favourite teams to play against?

RT: This year I enjoyed it against Liverpool, going and playing at Anfield was pretty special. It is one of those games everyone loves...

EB: We had a great first half there...

RT: We had a good eighty five minutes!

EB: Obviously you didn't expect to be playing but Brad got injured in the warm up and with the exception of the Manchester United match you have been in goal ever since...

RT: Yes, when Brad got injured I took my chance and I have stayed in ever since.

That is the thing in football you have got to be ready every time you are on the bench because if someone gets injured you're on.

EB: What do you think are your strengths and weaknesses as a young goalkeeper?

RT: I'm not sure really, you would have to ask my coach. I just try to improve my game as a whole and work hard in training.

EB: OK, as a goalkeeper, who was your hero growing up?

RT: Probably Peter Schmeichel. When I was younger I didn't really enjoy watching football on TV, but he was a goalkeeping legend for Manchester United and they were a massive team.

EB: What do you personally want out of the season?

RT: Just to keep playing, trying to improve and hopefully we will get some more points to keep us in the top half of the table.

It has been a year of big changes for the young goalkeeper and he has yet to agree terms on a new contract with the Boro. Hopefully we can get him to put pen to paper as soon as possible because against the odds, the boy's done good.
